The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems.
The position is at the Department of Microsystems and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold, Horten, Norway. Secondment will also be made to Zimmer & Peacock AS who specialises in electrochemical biosensors.
About the PhD-project
The scholarship will form part of a larger industrial research project conducted in collaboration with local biosensors company Zimmer & Peacock AS. The main goal is to develop an implantable telemetry-unit that is able to track glucose and cortisol in salmon using electrochemical sensors. Both glucose and cortisol act as biomarkers for the identification of stress, and the measurements will be conducted in real time through the transmission of data with acoustic signalling. The scholarship will focus on one or more of the following fields dependent on the skills profile of the candidate:
- (extending service lifetimes of the sensors, incl. compensation of aging phenomena of the sensors related to the environment in which the implant is located (e.g. abdominal cavity of fish), and to employ potential interferrents to assess spesificity;
- packaging of the telemetry module using low temperature processes that will not damage the sensors as well as ensuring good contact with the tissue once implanted;
- signal processing of data based on a limited transmission capacity (e.g. effective bandwidth of 0.03 bit/s).
The appointment is for a period of three years. The position does not include teaching duties.
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education in one or more of the following subjects: electrochemistry, microfabrication, biosensor technology or equivalent. Proficiency in English is a prerequsite. However, knowledge of Norwegian will be an advantage due to the participation of local industrial collaborators. It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems within three months of appointment. For admission to the Programme a weighted average of grade B or higher is usually required

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 482 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position.
A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.
