The Department of Physics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), announces an open position as Professor/Associate Professor within the field of applied theoretical/numerical physics. The applicant should demonstrate experience of and visions for building an internationally recognized research group with accompanying educational activities in synergy with the existing activities at the department.
About the department
The department is currently in an expansion phase and incorporates a broad activity within physics with activities in solid state physics/material physics, soft/complex physics, biopolymer physics, medical physics, statistical physics, optics, atmospheric physics, university didactics and astroparticle physics. The department is also since 2017 the hosting institute of two national centres of excellence: Porelab and QuSpin. The department provides the best recruiting physics study programmes in Norway both within applied and fundamental physics. It also provides a large set of courses within physics for other study programmes at NTNU.
The department consists of 27 professors, 15 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 9 adjunct professors/adjunct associate professors, 21 researchers and approximately 65 research fellows.

We seek applicants with the expertise and motivation to develop theoretical/computational physics activities in a manner that forms synergetic connections with the current experimental and theoretical activity within the department and take a leading role in developing the field over the next decades. To optimize the synergetic efforts, we are seeking a candidate with the primary competence within applied theoretical/computational physics with specialization in complex systems / soft matter / active matter. The candidate should contribute actively to the further development of national and international collaboration of the department.
The Professor/Associate Professor is to be jointly responsible together with other academic staff in the Department for matters regarding the physics discipline and is expected to contribute to teaching activities in the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing of the teaching program, including continuing education. The Professor/Associate Professor will have a specific responsibility for teaching courses within statistical physics and computational modelling. In addition, the candidate should be able to lecture any course within physics at the bachelor level. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to supervise master students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline and to take part in the departmental administrative work.
We are seeking candidates with strong potential for leadership in research and education, and strong commitment to high quality and ground-breaking research. Applicants should show potential to develop a strong research program of externally funded research and scholarships, both independently and in collaboration with colleagues at the department, the faculty and NTNU through national and European funding sources.
Candidates must display a proven ability to initiate and engage in local and international collaborations. The ability to collaborate and work strategically in groups to achieve long-term goals is an important prerequisite.
Candidates must hold a PhD relevant for research within theoretical/statistical/numerical physics and document strong research activities in modelling and exploring new phenomena within the chosen field of research. The field of research must lie within an area with strategic relevance to current activities at the department such as soft matter physics, complex matter, biological physics, intermetallic alloys, clay systems, colloids and hydrodynamics.
A strong teaching experience and motivation and ability to develop courses with high standards at all levels of physics is also a requirement for the position. Significant emphasis will be on teaching and communication skills. Evaluation of the applicants in this sense will be based on documented materials, including pedagogical training, presentation of academic work, previous experience from supervision and teaching of master and PhD candidates, as well as other related skills.
Candidates for a Professor position must have established excellent research and publication track record in the field of competence. He/she should demonstrate extensive teaching and supervision experience, established international scientific collaborations, administrative experience, and a documented ability to initiate or obtain external funding is desirable. Candidates for an Associate Professor position must – as a minimum – have two years of experience after the PhD degree, demonstrate strong scientific development and’ international experience as well as relevant teaching and supervision experience. Evaluation of candidates for both hiring levels (Associate Professor and Professor) will be based on scientific accomplishments, future potential and strategic match to the existing research environment at the department as well as pedagogic merits and potential.
The Professor/Associate Professor is obliged to adhere to regulations that concern changes and developments within the relevant fields of research and teaching, and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.
Academic staff that is unable to document formal pedagogical qualifications in university-level teaching is required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking up the appointment. Courses are available at the University.
Newly employed academic staff who do not speak or write a Scandinavian language are required to obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of taking up an appointment. This must be of a standard that is equivalent to Level Three in the “Norwegian for Foreigners” courses provided by the Department of Linguistics, NTNU.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position as Professor/Associate Professor is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
