A 21-months postdoc position in investigation and optimization of a novel greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation technology for manure slurry is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, University of Southern Denmark, Odense. The department offers a stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The position is available starting 1st of September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.


The postdoc project is part of a project entitled “A Novel Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Technology for Livestock Manure Slurry (NoGas)” funded by The Ministry of Environment and Food (Miljø- og Fødevareministeriet  (https://mfvm.dk/) and implies close collaboration with the other project researchers. Methane, ammonia, and other volatile compounds emitting from animal manure slurry have negative effects on the climate, environment and society.

The biogenic gasses originate as part of the metabolism of a wide variety of microbes found in animal manure. The overall aim of the NoGas project is to further develop and optimize the novel technology and demonstrate that it is an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly and safe mitigation strategy for manure slurry both in livestock housing and in storage facilities. The postdoc will optimize the novel GHG mitigation technology and study the microbiological and biochemical processes affected by the mitigation agents. Thus, the work will cover microbiology, biochemistry, and chemistry.

The starting date is 1st of September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline is 3rd of August 2020.

Qualification requirements:The applicant must have a PhD degree in microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related topic and have a strong background in microbiological and biochemical studies. Experience with microbial cultures, biochemical and metabolic processes, inhibitory mechanisms, and handling and analyzing data sets will be advantageous. The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, reliable and should be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with other researchers in the project. The successful applicant should have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. In addition, he/she must be willing to co-supervise students associated with the project.

Conditions of employmentEmployment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. Employment as a postdoc is temporary and will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Research will be predominant in the position. Teaching assignments can be agreed individually. Furthermore, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree. The Faculty determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time.
