At the Department of Science and Technology, at the university’s Norrköping campus, we provide education and conduct research in physics and electronics, communications/logistics and media- and information technology. Background: The Unit for Information Visualization at Linköping University is doing research in foundational information visualization in the context of a wide range of application-driven projects. Research on sonification is conducted in connection with data visualization. Sonification involves the use of sound to complement visual data representations or to improve human-machine interaction. 

Hereby advertises a position as
PhD student in Visualization and Media Technology with focus on Sonification,
formally based at the Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping.

As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

You will conduct research on sonification in the context of data visualization and interaction design. The main focus is musical sonification, where musical sounds and elements are influenced and changed by underlying data to convey information.

Examples of research questions include:
– How effective sonification can be composed and designed
– What musical elements are useful for sonification
– How different musical elements can be used to influence the perception of a sonification and the connection to underlying
– How sonification can support visual perception and cognition, thereby simplifying the understanding of visual information
– How sonication is best evaluated in terms of user experience, efficiency, and perceptibility

A theoretical approach based on human perception and cognition, sound synthesis, data visualization and evaluation studies will be deployed. The PhD study will be performed in a multidisciplinary environment.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

The candidate should a Master of Science degree in Media Technology and Engineering, or a relevant subject for the PhD position. The applicant is expected to have good knowledge of music, music and sound technology, and programming. Fluency in spoken and written English is also a requirement. Basic knowledge about sonification is a further merit, especially so sonification in relation to visualization of the solar system. Knowledge and familiarity with OpenSpace is also a merit. Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following subjects are advantageous: acoustics, communication science, interaction design, human-computer interaction, and visualization

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years´ full time research training.

Starting date 
By agreement.

The salary for PhD students is based on the department’s salary scale.
