Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a postdoc fellowship in organic synthesis commencing 1 October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for two years.
Description of the scientific environment
The research group headed by Assoc. Prof. Michael Pittelkow at the Department of Chemistry is looking for a smart, creative and independent postdoc to work on a project concerning the synthesis and characterization of conjugated helicene molecules. A strong background in organic synthesis chemistry is a prerequisite to be considered for the position.
In the research group we focus on a range of scientific questions. We are interested in both supramolecular chemistry and in aromatic chemistry. Almost all activities in the group are centered around organic synthesis, and we offer a strong interdisciplinary work environment.
This project is funded by DFF and the goal of the project is to prepare long fully conjugated helicenes and apply these structures in nano-sized molecular machines (for previous synthetic work, see: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2019, 18419-18423) and in the preparation of chiral OLEDs.
The work on molecular machines will be conducted in collaboration with Prof. Tal from the Weizmann institute and Prof. Hedegård from the Niels Bohr Institute, and the work concerning OLEDs will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Brock-Nannestad at the Department of Chemistry. The project will also address the challenge of preparing the first fully conjugated chiral poly-helicene, and further synthetic work will address the antiaromatic nature of circulenes (for previous work, see: Chem. Eur. J., 2020, 4935-4940 and Nature, 2019, 511-515).
The postdoc’s duties will include research within organic chemistry as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.
