The research group of Network Security and Trust at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a master’s thesis candidate related to interfaces and protocols for communications between power grid line differential protection relays.

Background

Line differential protection relays require a communications channel between the relays. Traditionally  these relays have been used in the high voltage transmission networks and there has been a direct communications link between the relays.  Due to the smart grid evolution line differential relays would potentially be needed also in medium voltage networks. This is due to distributed energy generation, e.g. solar and wind, which introduces more complicated power flow directions. Line differential relays have the advantage of being agnostic to power flow direction.

Due to the smart grid evolution the number of potential communications solutions also increases. This also applies to communications, between the line differential relays.  New packet based and wireless solutions are being introduced along with more traditional solutions like IEEE C37.94.

Outcome

An overview and evaluation of current and potential future communications solutions between line differential relays. Focus on layers 1-4.
