At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology a position as fulltime Associate Professor in Structural Architecture and Engineering is open for appointment from July 1st, 2021 or soon hereafter. The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology’s goal is the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrate creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology, and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position is placed at the intersection between architecture, structural design, advanced computation and technology driven fabrication. The key themes are tectonic relations between structures and architecture across scale and time, herein development of novel viable construction principles, material technologies, and computational design processes. Moreover, the position is inherently based on trans-disciplinary theoretical and applied fields.

We are looking for candidates with a background in structural design in architecture.

You demonstrate research qualifications and teaching skills equivalent to those achieved after a successful period of employment as Assistant Professor or Post-Doctoral Researcher. You have produced a significant body of independent peer-reviewed international publications and must demonstrate progression beyond academic work related to the PhD dissertation.

You have a background within either architecture or engineering and experience with working in integrated design environments. It is an advantage if you have an architecture profile, as the work is oriented towards the design fields, but with a clear focus on engineering and technological dimensions.

You show academic commitment to both basic and applied research. Furthermore, the experience, ability, and interest to work at the intersections between architecture, structural design, and advanced computation and technology driven fabrication will be emphasized. You are experienced and driven in developing new integrated architectural design approaches with focus on structural design in research and teaching.

The position includes teaching obligations at both undergraduate and master’s level e.g. supervising master thesis students. Employment as Associate Professor presupposes a positive assessment of documented teaching experience qualifications.

The philosophy of teaching in Architecture at Aalborg University is integrated architectural design based on Problem Based Learning (PBL). You are versatile in integrating architecture and structure based on an in depth understanding of the principles of the flow of forces in structures and constructions related to an in-depth architectural understanding of spatial gestures resulting from these principles. You can develop the students’ knowledge, skills and competences from basic to advanced level and support the students by teaching them “seeing”. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute to further develop the educational programmes and to administrative tasks on department level.

You may obtain further professional information from Head of Department, Hans Jørgen Andersen, by mail hja@create.aau.dk or tel. +45 9940 8834 or Professor, Runa T. Helwig, by mail rthe@create.aau.dk or tel. +45 9940 3627.

Qualification requirements:

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways.

The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

The application must contain the following:

  • A motivated text wherein the reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position are stated.
  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
  • Scientific qualifications. A complete list of publications must be attached with an indication of the works the applicant wishes to be considered. You may attach up to 10 publications.
  • Teaching qualifications described in the teaching portfolio.  If this is not enclosed the applicant must include an explanation for its absence.
  • Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.

The applications are only to be submitted online by using the “Apply online” button below. An assessment committee will assess all candidates.

AAU wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background or belief.
