At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Computer Science, a PhD stipend for outstanding students is available within the Computer Science study programme. Highly motivated individuals are invited to apply for the PhD position, expected to start in April 1, 2021 or soon thereafter. The Department of Computer Science features a broad range of synergistic activities within research and education in the general area of computer science, including curiosity-driven research and targeted research in collaboration with industrial partners, as well as traditional university education, with a unique problem- and project-based focus, and continued education and knowledge dissemination.
The position is in the context of DIREC, the Danish Centre for Digital Technologies. The vision of the Danish Centre for Digital Technologies (DIREC) is to become an international leading centre with respect to research and education in computer science. DIREC is an alliance between the strongest computer science departments in Denmark bringing together Danish research strongholds and leading researchers across departments.
Safe Learning of Safety Critical Adaptive Controllers This PhD position is within the DIREC subproject on Verifiable and Safe AI for Autonomous Systems. The aim is to develop methods and tools that will enable industry to automatically learn controllers for safety critical systems within a variety of domains. The challenge is to offer the advantages of AI-based system (robustness to small changes, near-optimality) to the safety critical industry which requires strong guarantees about the behavior of the controller. The key problem is to explore the design space between the controller synthesis (correct-by-construction) and reinforcement learning (efficient but based on sampling) to design new learning methods. The project will involve utilization improvements of the tool UPPAAL Stratego (www.uppaal.org), and will be run in collaboration with IT University Copenhagen, and industrial partners: Grundfos, Seluxit, Aarhus Vand, and HOFOR.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
