Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering one or more PhD scholarships in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning, commencing 01.03.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The PhD students will join CoAStaL [http://coastalcph.github.io/] – one of the world’s best, most diverse, and friendliest research groups in NLP and Machine Learning. NLP at University of Copenhagen is ranked 2nd in Europe. We cover most if not all NLP applications, with a particular emphasis on scenarios where supervision is limited, including transfer learning, multilingual learning, multi-task learning, and reinforcement learning.

Project description
The scholarships are funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The project goal is to develop robust handwriting recognition models to digitize historical tables of names and birth dates, and the prospective PhD students can engage in all related research topics, including, but not limited to, handwriting (digit/word) recognition, constrained inference for natural language generation, transfer learning and modeling historical drift, cross-lingual transfer of handwriting recognition and language models, ensemble/committee-based learning, and recognition/language modeling with document-level consistency constraints.

Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, or related, with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 331,125 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,811). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
