The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, with a total of some 100 employees. The communication routes are good, both nationally and internationally. The research focuses within the fields of Atomic- and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Spintronics, and Complex Systems and Biophysics, and is performed in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the department include Bachelor- and Master programs in Physics, Physics teacher-training programs, as well as outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public.

Information about the research group: Prof. Raimund Feifel’s research group concentrates on electron and ion spectroscopy of atoms and molecules in different states of charge and excitation, and has considerable, internationally well-recognized, experience in developing and using high-resolution electron and ion correlation spectrometers, in combination with pulsed discharge lamps, synchrotron radiation and free electron laser sources in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) and X-ray spectral region. This group is in the process of developing these activities towards the investigation of negatively charged atomic and molecular species, so-called anions, both in the static and in the ultrafast time-resolved domain. The latter necessitates the construction of a negative ion set-up which design is adapted to our multi-particle correlation spectrometers and attosecond beam lines based on higher-order harmonic generation (HHG) of suitably high flux. The research group of Prof. Raimund Feifel collaborates within the framework of several national and international networks which give the holder of the position good possibilities for international contacts and periods of research carried out also at other locations.

Job assignments

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is looking for a postdoc in the field of experimental studies of electron emission processes of atoms and molecules. A suitable background is a PhD in either ion physics, atomic and molecular physics, in laser physics or spectroscopy, or a combination of these fields. The research to be conducted within this position will focus on experimental investigations of fundamental properties of negative ions emitting electrons upon photon absorption, and implies the construction and commissioning of a negative ion set-up with a design adapted to our multi-particle correlation spectrometers and attosecond beam lines based on higher-order harmonic generation (HHG) of suitably high flux, as well as applying multi-particle correlation spectroscopic methods for the detection of all charged particles created in the electron emission processes. The scientific questions addressed by this research program are primarily of fundamental nature. Daily activities, however, will imply work in applied areas involving VUV and X-radiation sources, optics, electronics, programming, hardware control and data acquisition. A postdoctoral position in this area therefore provides a solid foundation for a future career both in academia and industry.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who has a background in ion physics and laser physics, preferably with the handling and manipulation of ions and with experience in ion trap technology.

Eligibility

To qualify as a postdoctoral fellow, the applicant must have completed a Swedish doctoral degree or must have a foreign degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree.

Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline and who have not held a post-doc position within the same or similar subject area at the University of Gothenburg for more than one year.

Applicants with a degree obtained earlier than the stipulated three years may be preferred if special reasons exist. Special reasons in this context include, but are not limited to, leave due to illness or parental leave.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
