At the Department of Chemistry, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Computational Chemistry. The research fellow will take part in the Computational Biology Unit, a multidisciplinary centre for research and education within the field of bioinformatics, and the research group Computational design and exploration at Department of Chemistry, both at University of Bergen.
The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years and is associated with the 5-year study program in medical technology offered at University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
The project will use all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study biomolecular systems. Of particular interest will be high-fidelity prediction of the structure and dynamics of biomacromolecules, and the rigorous calculation of their mechanical properties from MD, using novel methodologies developed in the host group. The research fellow will have considerable freedom in defining the exact project of interest; to this end, candidates are warmly encouraged to contact the host group leader, assoc. prof. Markus Miettinen, prior to applying. All our employees are expected to contribute to research and teaching of high quality, and the open position includes teaching obligations comprising a workload of half a year of the employment period.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent foreign degree within physics, chemistry, computer science, or a related field. PhD-students may apply if defence of the PhD-thesis is completed by 31.07.2022. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Programming experience is a requirement, and familiarity with C++ is an advantage.
- Experience from all-atom MD simulations of biomolecular systems is an advantage.
- Experience from MD force field development is an advantage.
- Good knowledge of statistical physics is an advantage.
- Experience with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and to be able to demonstrate good cooperative skills.
- Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, potential and personal drive for research and a scientific career will also be given substantial weight when evaluating the candidates.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:
The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. Both the research project and teaching assignments reflect this overarching ambition. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
Upon appointment, the fellow must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a progress plan. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
We can offer:
- A good and professionally stimulating working environment
- Salary at pay grade 61 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 5) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 553 500,-. Further promotions are made according to length of service. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
- Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
- Good welfare benefits
Your application must include:
- A brief account of the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
- The names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
- CV
- List of peer-reviewed scientific publications
- Transcripts and diplomas. If you have not yet completed your PhD degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming the expected date of award of your degree. Your PhD degree must be documented with transcripts and/or diploma, or alternatively a confirmation from your institution on completed degree, by 31.07.2022.
- Relevant certificates/references
The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge.
