There is a vacancy for a 3-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology

There is a vacancy for a 3-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (www.sars.no/) in the research group of Dr. Daniel Chourrout. The position is funded by Sars Centre core funding. The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen, and is a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) www.embl.de/. The place of work will be at the Sars Centre. The preferred but negotiable starting time is June 2022.

About the project/work tasks:

The research group studies the evolution of chordates using as model organism the tunicate Oikopleura dioica. The project aims at elucidating the role and regulation of Hox genes during embryonic and larval development. There are nine Hox genes in Oikopleura that were dispersed at nine distinct locations of the genome (Seo et al, Nature 2004). The work will benefit from new technological developments for gene knock out and gene expression knock down obtained and exploited by the group (Deng et al, Current Biology 2018; Mikhaleva et al, J Exp Zool 2014) as well as whole embryo single cell RNA sequencing data (unpublished) and important genomic resources. A mutant line for Hox1 has already been produced with thorough description of the phenotype. The project will include some comparisons with Hox gene expression in the tunicate Ciona intestinalis, which is also bred at the Sars Centre.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in fields related to the project and must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
  • A good knowledge and experience of up-to-date molecular biology and morphological imaging techniques is required. Experience of genome-wide identification of transcription factor target genes and/or chromatin accessibility studies would be an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with others in a structured manner
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English
