At the Department of Informatics, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Informatics – Optimization.
The position is for a fixed term of 4 years and is financed by the University of Bergen.
About the Department
Digitalization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of the society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of the society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory and visualization. We are also building up a group in computer science didactics. The department offers education for the future at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The department is in rapid growth regarding its number of students, research directions, and employees. We have today about 900 students, and 150 employees, among which 37 are faculty and 70 PhD candidates. We have established the Center for Data Science (CEDAS) as an important extension of our research and education activities.
About the project/work tasks:
All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research and teaching.
The working environment for this position will be at the Optimization research group, which conducts research and teaching in Operations Research (OR), analytics, and data science. For this position, we are looking for an excellent scientist, who has experience in modelling as well as in developing heuristics to solve real-life optimization problems in e.g. logistics, transportation, or energy industries.
The activity in the optimization group is growing. In collaboration with the Department of Economics, we have recently initiated a 5-year integrated master program in information technology and economics. The successful candidate for the announced position is expected to develop and teach courses associated with this program. She/he is also expected to be actively involved in recruitment and supervision of master students, particularly in relation to the new program. The new postdoc will be in contact with companies and other research institutes, and she/he is expected to strengthen the international collaboration network of the optimization group. A substantial part of her/his work will be in close collaboration with other researchers and PhD students. It is further expected that in the research work, real-world optimization problems will be analyzed and solved, and that new scientific achievements are reported regularly. Publication of the findings in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and at top-ranked international conferences are deliverables of crucial importance. The successful applicant is expected to take initiatives to grant applications for submission to e.g. the Norwegian Research Council.
Qualifications and personal qualities:

- Having obtained the PhD within the last 3 years is an advantage. (This is not applicable if the applicant has done/is doing a postdoc after her/his PhD.)
- Research experience in mathematical modelling and in the application of heuristics and exact optimization methods to real-life problems is a requirement.
- Applicants must have excellent programming skills.
- Experience in teaching at university level, in particular of courses related to operations research is an advantage.
- Experience from international research collaboration is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
