Position as PhD Research Fellow in Information Systems available at Department of Informatics.
Preferred starting date October 2022.
The research fellowship is a full-time position with a fixed-term period of three years. Candidates who can and want to contribute to teaching and supervision at the department may be offered an additional year of teaching-related compulsory duties in the early stages of the contract period. In this case, the appointment period will be extended to a total of four years, where compulsory duties will be spread out over the full contract period, averaging 25% per year.

Job description
The position is devoted to carrying out research focusing on similarities and differences between different types of intelligence, primarily focusing on, but not limited to, human intelligence and artificial intelligence (AI). The research focuses on the development, implementation, and usage of AI solutions in organizations, how AI can augment decision-making, and the ethical consequences of AI.
The doctoral candidate will be connected to an ongoing project with a governmental organization that explores judgment and ethical consequences of AI. The project includes researchers from both information systems and philosophy. Consequently, we are looking for a doctoral candidate interested in philosophy and information systems.
For this position, we are looking for a research candidate who will:
- Use qualitative analysis with an engaged scholarship approach, for example, participatory observations, interviews, and ethnographic studies.
- Focus on socio-technical relations of AI development, implementation, and use
- Strengthen the project team’s interdisciplinary approach and outcomes
- Engage in project work
The project is an intersection of informatics and philosophy that illustrates a picture of the ethical and sustainable AI-driven augmentation of managerial decision-making.
The project involves working with community-building organizations (e.g, in the healthcare or transportation industries) that are transitioning to the unprecedented era of hybrid human-AI collaboration, whereby the interaction between AI and human intelligence will become crucial for developing competitive advantages.
The project focuses on understanding how AI can be integrated in strategic and judicious decision-making and how it can best be leveraged from a human-centered perspective to enable ethically sustainable solutions. The project will investigate human-AI collaborations at strategic, operational and practice levels, exploring judgement and ethical consequences of AI.
The project focuses on how a community-building organization can create prerequisites for enabling collaboration towards judicious and ethically sustainable decisions.
The project involves working with decision support systems from a socio-technological perspective where organizational interoperability and judgment are balanced with a data-driven focus. The project intends to contribute to, for example, improved judgment in decision-making, principles for orchestrating collaboration, and knowledge development in the fields of ethics and morals.
Qualification requirements
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Required qualifications
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Information Systems or other relevant discipline
- Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
Candidates without a Master’s degree have until August 2022 to complete the final exam.
Preferable qualifications:
- Experience of work in projects related to AI implementation
- You have experience in working in interdisciplinary teams
- You speak Norwegian or a related Scandinavian language.
- Knowledge about digital innovation and digital transformation
- Knowledge and experience in qualitative research methods
Personal skills:
- You are open to learning
- You have, or are open to, developing communication skills across various research disciplines
- You have the capacity to conduct empirical research and are resilient to cope with setbacks in the process.
- You are a team player who is interested in co-developing research ideas and in playing an active role in the team – yet you also (and like to) work independently
- You enjoy organizing workshops and seminars both in academia and industry
- A demonstrated interest in the theme of AI and improved judgment in decision-making in organization contexts
Grade requirements:
The norm is as follows:
- the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
- the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
