We are recruiting a researcher to work primarily in the EPOS project related to developing research infrastructure to archive and access geoscientific data. You will also be involved in other projects as well teaching Exploration geophysics courses. Take the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary, dynamic, international research environment in close collaboration with industry and leading universities worldwide!
Subject description
Exploration geophysics is a subject based on the laws and methods of physics, which in combination with geological information can be used to locate natural resources such as mineral deposits, hydrocarbon and water. The focus of research is on the development of geophysical methods for exploration of mineral deposits.
Project description
The pan-European European Plate Observing System (EPOS) distributed e-infrastructure is a long-term sustainable solution for the collection, securing, dissemination and analysis of data related to the solid Earth and the processes forming the solid Earth and surface. One of the core services of the project is Geoelectromagnetic observations Thematic Core Service (TCS). TCS Geoelectromanetic Observations is responsible for the provision of data about the geomagnetic field between the Earth’s core and space. The EMTDAMO (the European Service of Magnetotluric Data and Models) service was introduced for data that determine the electrical resistivity of the Earth’s subsurface by measuring the response on natural time variations of the Earth’s magnetic and electric fields. Luleå University of Technology is responsible for EMTDAMO, which will collect data from various sources as the basis for new and improved resistivity models of the Earth.
Duties
Within the EPOS project you will be working on archiving of EM data, which involves development and management of databases. The big part of your working time will be devoted to project and data management and communication with TCS partners. The position responsibilities also include both field work (to collect new data) and theoretical/development work as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. You will work primarily with electromagnetic data with focus on magnetotelluric observations. 3D geophysical data modelling/inversion is also important element of work duties, especially when being involved in other projects run at Luleå University of Technology. You are expected to work on our in-house development of modelling/inversion framework. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop your pedagogical skills in teaching as well as co-supervise PhD students. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects.
Qualifications
You must have excellent academic credentials and completed PhD or equivalent degree in geophysics, mathematics, physics, computer sciences or other relevant subject. Experience in software development (Python, Matlab and Web development in particular) and management of large data sets are required. Good understanding of theory and numerical methods used in modelling and inversion are important. You are expected to work in a team and are open to collaborate with colleagues and external partners. Fluent written and spoken English is required.
Further information
Employment is for 2 years with possibilities for prolongation. Teaching and other department duties are included with max 50%. Position should start as soon as suitable candidate is found.
