PhD-position in Immunology combined with bioinformatics

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a PhD-position (100 %) is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions includes 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is part of the project “21-Hydroxylase reactive B cells and their immunotherapeutic potential in autoimmune Addison’s disease”, funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

  • Autoimmune diseases comprise a group of about 80 disorders that can involve almost any organ of the body. Like most autoimmune diseases, autoimmune Addison’s disease is multifactorial, with both genetic and environmental factors at play, and the exact mechanisms behind the disorders are still poorly understood.
  • In autoimmune Addison’s disease the adrenal cortex is destroyed by infiltrating immune cells leading to loss of endogenous cortisol production. We have recently described several genes implicated in autoimmune Addison’s disease which points to a dysregulation of B cells.
  • This project is aimed to substantially advance our knowledge of the role of B cells in the pathogenesis of Addison’s disease, searching for new prognostic and diagnostic markers, discover regulators of self-tolerance, and explore targets for immune therapy.
  • We aim to attract candidates that have interest in multidisciplinary approaches combining immunological studies with bioinformatic analyses. Through our national registry and biobank, we have access to large amounts of genetic and clinical data.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in molecular biology, cell biology or immunology.
  • Experience from a molecular biology laboratory including the methods flow cytometry and culture and expansion of primary immune cells will be emphasised
  • Experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • The applicant must be fluent in oral and written English
  • Personal and intrapersonal qualities will be emphasised. Ambitions and potential will also be taken into account.
