Postdoctoral Research Fellow position
At Geophysical Institute, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position in the field of Climate Dynamics. The position is for a fixed term of three years and is associated with externally funded projects. It is financed by funding from the Trond Mohn Foundation and the Research Council of Norway.
About the project/work tasks
This is a joint position between the Bjerknes Climate Prediction Unit (https://bcpu.w.uib.no/) and Climate Futures (https://www.climatefutures.no), that focuses on developing the improved climate predictions and services for the Atlantic-to-Arctic sector on seasonal to multi-annual timescales.
The main aim of the position is to improve understanding and modelling of the mechanisms of climate variability in the Atlantic-to-Arctic regions and surrounding continents, and to integrate these into climate services. The work will be on tropical and extra-tropical dynamics on subseasonal to decadal timescales, and may cover extra-tropical blocking, storm track and annular mode variability, teleconnections, and stratosphere-troposphere interactions. The work will involve analysis of data (model, observations, and reanalysis) using advanced statistical techniques, such as MSSA, MEMD, and application of a hierarchy of models. The work will also involve validation of the Norwegian Prediction Model (NorCPM) and exploring statistical approaches to enhance and refine predictions. There will be close collaboration with the developers of the Norwegian Earth System and Climate Prediction Models. There will also be regular interaction with user partners through involvement in pilot studies within Climate Futures.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree in mathematics, physics, meteorology, oceanography, climate dynamics, or another relevant discipline or must have submitted their doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- A very good background in tropical and extra-tropical atmospheric dynamics and in the coupled stratosphere/troposphere system is a requirement.
- Very good programming and data analysis skills are a requirement (e.g., in Fortran, Python, Matlab).
- Experience in analysing climate model and prediction output, and in performing model simulations is a requirement.
- Experience in analysing the climate dynamics of the North Atlantic region, including coupled stratosphere/troposphere interactions and teleconnections is an advantage.
- Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others. Special requirements for the position are the willingness and ability to work across disciplinary boundaries in a transdisciplinary team that includes end users.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience (quality and breadth), ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:
The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. If the appointee lacks teaching experience, or other relevant qualifications, the employment period may be increased to 3 years and 3 months. Teaching and other duties will in such cases be added to the position. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
In accordance with the Research Council’s rules, neither can anyone be hired more than once as an NFR-financed postdoctoral research fellow.
For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.
It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
