Senior Engineer in Research Infrastructure

A permanent position is open in the Scientific Computing group at the IT division, University of Bergen (UiB). The main tasks of the position are to operate, develop and support infrastructure systems for research and scientific computing.

The IT division at UiB is one of the biggest Information Technology environments in Vestlandet, Norway. The division’s mission is to deliver high quality IT services and contribute to achieving UiB goals. We deliver a wide range of services in development, operations, governance, and user support. The division has approximately 110 employees and is prioritizing continuous improvement via Lean methodology and follows ITIL framework. We are product oriented and apply extensive set of methods and frameworks in spectrum of our deliveries.

Duties and work tasks:

  • Develop and operate infrastructure and services for scientific computing
  • Develop and operate NRIS infrastructure and service
  • Develop and operate NREC services for Large Hadron Collider (https://home.cern/science/accelerators/large-hadron-collider)
  • Involvement in local, national, and international projects and collaborations
  • Automation of services for scientific data processing
  • Taking part in the group’s HPC user support activities
  • Developing internal and external service documentation

Qualifications and personal attributes:

  • Experience with advanced use of Linux operating system
  • Competence in Python programming or experience with other relevant programming languages and interest to learn Python
  • Compilation and management of scientific software in Linux environments
  • Experience with the operation and debugging of IT systems
  • Interest in interaction with users
  • Higher education, minimum bachelor’s level (overingeniør), with master and PhD level (senioringeniør) encouraged. Formal education can be compensated by documented relevant work experience
  • Norwegian language is not a requirement but is an advantage. For a successful candidate without knowledge of Norwegian language it will be required to take and successfully pass at least level 2 of the Norwegian language course at UIB within 2 years
  • Good communication skills in both written and oral

  • Version control, git and DevOps
  • Containers, Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform

  • Position as head engineer (code 1087) or senior engineer (code 1181) depending on qualification, 53-70 (currently kr 483 700,- – 650 300,-), or 58-74 (currently kr 524 900,- – 702 100,-). In the case of a highly qualified applicant, a higher salary may be considered
