TheDepartment of Computer Science (IDI), group forData and Artificial Intelligence (DART), has a vacancy for the position of Professor/Associate professor in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with focus on health application.
The main field of research will be within Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with a particular focus on health applications, i.e., Artificial Intelligence and Health. The professor is expected to play an important role in research and research-based education within this field, in cooperation with existing staff at both the IE and medical faculty. The position will be connected to the Norwegian Open AI Lab (NAIL). More specifically, the relevant topics for the position include (but are not limited to):
- AI methods for precision and personalized medicine
- Synthetic data generation and data analysis for health applications
- Explainable AI in healthcare addressing among others data quality, development, robustness and performance
- Trustworthy AI in healthcare addressing among others data access, bias, privacy, purpose and implementation
The research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the Department of Computer Science is driven by an interest in contributing to the state-of-the-art at the level of individual methods and algorithms, coupled with an interest in studying and developing fruitful combinations of methods related to the health domain.
The research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact. Our strongest contributions to the international research front so far have been within Bayesian learning and probabilistic reasoning, evolutionary learning and neural networks, and instance-based learning and case-based reasoning. In addition, we have ongoing activities within large-scale data and information management at an international level. Over the last years there has been an increased interest in applying AI and machine learning methods on the health domain, and NAIL has already had a lot of activities around this topic. For the new position, it will be important to find candidates that complement (and build on) the competence already present at IDI and the IE Faculty.
Applicants must have a formal background in computer science, with research focus on AI and/or machine learning.

Responsibilities
The professor will be a regular member of the department’s scientific staff, with privileges and duties following from that, including teaching and student supervision. The responsibilities include the following:
- The associate professor is expected to be able to disseminate relevant parts of the research to a wider audience.
- Establish collaboration with relevant colleagues at other departments at NTNU, especially those belonging to the medical faculty.
- Participate in administrative activities, such as hiring committees, educational and research boards, etc., that are conducted at IDI.
- Contribute to an excellent learning environment in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. The associate professor is expected to teach courses at all levels and should supervise master’s and Doctoral students
Required qualifications
Professor:
You must have the qualifications required for the position of professor in the field of artificial intelligence, as outlined in § 1-2 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.
- Your scientific experience must be primarily in the field of AI and/or machine learning (or a comparable relevant field)
- Research experience within cross-disciplinary areas of AI/machine learning and health
- Peer-reviewed publications from the top venues within relevant areas.
In addition to the requirements for basic educational competence, you must also document:
- The development of the quality of your own teaching and supervision of students over time
- Broad experience as a supervisor, preferably at a master’s/PhD level
- Participation in improving the quality of education in a professional environment
Associate professor:
You must have the qualifications required for the position of associate professor in the field of artificial intelligence, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts
- Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within the field of AI and/or machine learning
- Research experience within cross-disciplinary areas of AI and health
- Peer-reviewed publications from the top venues within relevant areas.
Applicable to all:
You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
Preferred qualifications
- Candidates having obtained funding from recent EU framework programs or with documented international research collaboration. A good, documented understanding of the relevant research fields and domains.
- Experience and/or formal training/education in healthcare, medicine or life sciences.
- Documented experience and ability with methods, software tools and open-source technology relevant to the domain.
- Ability and willingness to conduct research in a multidisciplinary setting and team.
- Norwegian or another Scandinavian language

Salary and conditions
A position as Professor (code 1013) and Associate professor (code 1011) will gross salary in accordance with agreement. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
Employment will be granted in accordance with the principles outlined in the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. Applicants should be aware that there may be changes in the working environment after employment has commenced.
