There is a vacancy for one PhD candidate at The Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, NTNU, in collaboration with The Department of Medical Genetics at St. Olavs hospital and the partners in the Clinical Academic Group for Rare Genetic Diseases at Sykehuset Levanger as well as Møre and Romsdal Hospital Trust. One of the main aims of the CAG is to advance care for patients with rare diseases in Midt-Norge and provide novel insights into genetic and molecular basis of the diseases – the PhD candidate will work on different aspects of these regional efforts.
As part of the multidisciplinary team at these Hospitals and the University, we have in place a strong diagnostic environment, state-of-the-art facilities for disease modelling and productive interactions with registries and patient organisations. The PhD will involve analysis of clinical data, as well as disease models of syndromic and non-syndromic rare genetic conditions. The main objective is to develop new insights into pathomechanisms and use this as foundation for new points in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that in cooperation with the CAG-partners will be translated into better clinical services for the patients in the region.
Required selection criteria
- Norwegian authorization as a medical doctor and completed first part of the medical specialisation, corresponding to Norwegian “lege i spesialisering del 1” (LIS1)
- You must have a strong academic background in medicine, rare diseases, cardiology or neurobiology from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s doctoral program.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
Preferred selection criteria
- Excellent understanding of rare diseases
- Relevant clinical experience in medicine, for example in the field of rare genetic diseases, cardiology, neurology or/and paediatrics.
- As future member of the CAG – Motivation and ability to shift organizational and disciplinary boundaries to the benefit of the rare disease patients in the region.
- The position will require documented spoken and written knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language
- Good computer skills / data processing skills
- Good communications skills
- Good written and oral English language skills

Salary and conditions
As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years in case of a 100% position, or 6 years in case of a 50% position.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Medicine and Health Sciences within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
