The Department of sociology and political science has a vacant position as PhD in sports science. The purpose of the position is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The PhD-position is a temporary position for a period of three years. The position may be ascribed obligation to work and extended until one year.
Your immediate leader will be Head of the Department.
Duties of the position
The PhD position is an educational position that gives a promising research recruit the possibility for scientific development. The PhD-position’s main objective is to qualify for work in research positions.
The PhD-candidate is expected to participate in the research group Skill and Performance Development in Sports and School and the project includes three subprojects, with the following research questions:
- Map how the selection mechanisms used by coaches work in identifying sports talents across sports and gender, and their impact on talented athletes.
- Examine the relationship between coaches ‘behavior and athletes’ development.
- Examine the extent to which various individual factors (motivation, perfectionism, mental toughness) and team-related factors (cohesion, team identity, team trust, intrateam communication) are related to/or contributing to an optimal talent development environment.
It is required that the candidate participates in international activities, among others through conference attendance and/or research stays at educational institutions abroad.
The position may be ascribed obligation to work and extended with up to one year. It is expected that the candidate contributes to teaching in study programmes in sports science as a part of this.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a professionally relevant background in social science, preferably in sports science, or equivalent education.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education. Candidates who are in the final phase of their master’s degree can apply and will be assessed, but cannot be hired until they have completed the master’s degree.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s doctoral program
- Good oral and written communication skills in English.
- The quality of the PhD project sketch (1,500 words maximum).
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
Preferred selection criteria
- 1-2 years relevant experience in research, such as dissemination and participation in research project, is advantageous.
- Good oral and written communication skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years. The position may be ascribed obligation to work and extended with up to one year of duty work.
Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Social Sciences, specializing in political science/sociology. As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite that the appointed takes up residence so that she/he can be present and available for the institution as required daily.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, grades from master`s degree, experience and personal suitability and motivation for the position. The applicants will be assessed by the (1) quality of the potential in the project description (skisse), (2) the quality and relevance of the candidates scientific production, and (3) potential contributions to the project, research group and department.
