Use your research to contribute to understanding the complexity and diversity of today’s global political relations and inspire the next generation of political experts with your teaching. The Department of Political Science at Radboud University is looking for an Assistant Professor of International Relations. Although we are looking for a broadly oriented and versatile lecturer in the field of international relations, specific expertise in the field of Asian economic and security relations, with a particular focus on international and regional organisations, is preferred.

The department’s education and research in international relations reflect the diversity of International Relations as a subdiscipline of Political Science. At the same time, they are characterised by theory-driven research and the importance of transferring diversity and theory-driven research to political science students. Education in International Relations is embedded in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Political Science, both of which are praised for their coherence and quality. Our research in International Relations is part of the broader research programme of the Department of Political Science (entitled ‘Legitimacy and Institutional Change’), which focuses on two subthemes, namely (i) Conflict at the Crossroads of the Global, and (ii) National and Sustainable Democracy. Researchers also participate in faculty and inter-faculty multidisciplinary research groups.

As an Assistant Professor of International Relations, you will develop and teach courses in the domain of international relations. In particular, you will focus on the fields of Asian international relations and global governance. You will spend 55% of your time on teaching and the other 45% will be spent on research, grant writing, and valorisation.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in International Relations.
  • You have a strong affinity with Political Science as a discipline, as well as with multidisciplinarity.
  • You have teaching experience at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.
  • You have knowledge of qualitative and quantitative social science research methods.
  • You are able to publish in leading international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Your research interests align well with the Political Science research programme.
  • You have a clear medium-term view on your own expertise and niche within IR, including opportunities for external fundraising.
  • You are a team player.
  • You are willing to contribute to the organisation of education and research within the Department of Political Science.
  • You are in possession of a university teaching qualification.
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is recommended. If you are not a native speaker, you will be expected to be able to teach in Dutch in two years’ time.

The Political Science Chair Group is built around two chairs: Empirical Political Science and International Relations, the latter including Peace and Conflict Studies. The chair group offers a Bachelor’s degree programme in Political Science and six Master’s degree tracks, each leading to a Master’s degree in Political Science. The educational programme is characterised by small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills.

We offer

  • It concerns an employment for 0.8 – 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €3,974 and a maximum of €5,439 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be converted to a permanent position.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 29 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
