Sessional Lecturer
ANT363H5F – Magic and Science
Course Description: What’s the difference between magic and science? Is there one? This course explores anthropological approaches to magic and science and related topics, raising basic questions about the nature of knowledge: what can we know about the world, and how can we know it? Through close readings of key anthropological texts, we consider what–if anything–differentiates magic and science, belief and truth, subjectivity and objectivity, irrationality and rationality.
Session: September 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022
Lectures: Wednesdays 9:00 to 11:00am (In-person)
Estimated Course Enrolment: 50
Estimated TA Support: Up to 70 hours (total number of assigned hours is dependent on course enrolment and course approvals)
Salary:
- $8,489.67 for Sessional Lecturer I
- $8,869.25 for Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term
- $9,085.58 for Sessional Lecturer II
- $9,301.90 for Sessional Lecturer III
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a PhD in Anthropology with a focus on sociocultural anthropology, and other aspects of this course as described. Experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar online systems (e.g., Quercus, Canvas-based technologies, Zoom, etc.) preferred. The mode of instruction for this course is expected to be in-person. However, if this changes for any reason, you will be provided with as much advance notice as practicable.
Duties: Preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and/or exams; supervision of teaching assistants (includes providing instruction on how to mark, as well as holding office hours); marking of students’ work (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials); submission of grades to university officials; and holding regular office hours.
