Position Overview

The Downtown Urban Campus is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time General Maintenance Worker.  This position requires variable shift work which may include days, evening and/or weekends.  

The Facilities Worker ensures that the event spaces and classroom furniture are set up according to the needs of each user group and that the physical campus infrastructure is maintained to the standards expected of a Class A building. The incumbent will work closely with downtown campus event planning and information technology staff. 

This position reports to the Director – DTC with work performed under minimal supervision. Daily tasks and work assignments are received from the Operations Team Lead. This position is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. 

This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, heavy lifting, year round indoor responsibilities, and limited outdoor responsibilities. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

There are two primary purposes of this position:

  1. To coordinate and perform the day-to-day maintenance, painting, and repairs required for a public, mixed use student/rental facility, and
  2. To set up and dismantle tables, chairs, staging and podiums for special events and classrooms.

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Set Up and Tear Down Event Centre; Assist with 6th Floor Servery
  • Responsible for arranging for return all refundable recyclables
  • Manage public common area spaces
  • Organize and maintain campus storage areas including storage room and basement
  • Ensure classrooms, meeting rooms, and event centres are well maintained and clean
  • General Maintenance and Repair
  • General campus cleaning : for tasks not covered by cleaning contractor or to augment staff

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Painting expertise
  • Knowledge of handling small tools and ability to undertake minor repairs in a commercial building
  • Must have safety boots
  • Basic computer literacy is required, familiarity with Outlook email and contact management program and introductory level Word
  • The incumbent must be fluent in both written and verbal English
  • Must have a pleasant, customer-service oriented demeanor
  • Attention to personal hygiene – Must present a neat and clean physical appearance as this involves working around campus students, staff and clients
