Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Built Environment invites

Open applications for Postdoctoral Researcher in Future Traffic Management

The Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering research group is seeking a highly motivated and creative postdoctoral researcher who would undertake research in the area of Future Traffic Management, with special emphasis on transport system modelling, estimation, and control, accounting for the presence of future mobility services and connected automated mobility. The Postdoctoral researcher will join a multidisciplinary team and conduct research on developing novel traffic estimation and control strategies, at local and/or network level, considering the, possibly new, inputs (and outputs) that future systems may have. In particular, the integration of hard and soft management measures, where the latter include, for example, pricing and nudging strategies, will be considered in this research. The research will have a strong dynamical modelling and simulation component, where novel data-driven-based models and tools (including machine learning and artificial intelligence) may play a fundamental role, aiming for a more sustainable and carbon-neutral society. The candidates must have a high motivation for advancing state-of-the-art research and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team.

The position should start by autumn 2022 and is intended for full-time work. The selected individuals will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Claudio Roncoli. The successful applicant will have the possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers, as well as to attend scientific conferences and meetings. Moreover, the research group provides strong support and academic freedom, with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University.

Research areas, requirements, and expectations

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Modelling, estimation, and control of traffic systems
  • Mobility and network traffic management
  • AI-based modelling and data-driven control applied to future traffic systems
  • Agent-based modelling
  • Decentralised and coordinated multi-objective optimisation applied to future transport systems

A prospective postdoc is expected to fulfil the following requirements:

  • Timely completion of a Doctoral degree in a field that is well-aligned with the proposed research interests
  • Knowledge of quantitative methods used in engineering and skills in applying quantitative methods to solve engineering problems
  • Very good programming skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Willingness to learn
  • Very good English proficiency

The applicant is expected to:

  • Publish in top journals and scientific conferences
  • Participate in research proposal preparation
  • Organize international scientific events
  • Guide doctoral and master’s students
  • If applicable, teach in the master’s programme
