Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to Principal Investigator.

Following established procedures, the Research Associate (Consellor/psychogist) will be part of the project implementation. In addition, the Consellor/psychogist will be involved in the evaluations of participants (including patients with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders in advanced stages and their carepartners) and in telephone interviews.

The project related to this position aims to create the Calgary Movement disorders Palliative Care program to guarantee access to this type of care to all Albertans and to expand the understanding of PC interventions in people with parkinsonism by a rigorous monitoring and evaluation process and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Training will be provided in the field of neurodegenerative disorders and other aspects of the job.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • In the context of the outpatient interdisciplinary program, the Counsellor/Psychologist will be responsible for conducting assessments in the following areas:
    • Neuropsychological
    • Psychological
    • Personality and Behavioural
    • Functional Capacity and Disability
    • Social context and relationships
    • Carepartner burden
  • Demonstrate range, depth, and flexibility in responding professionally to client needs for preventive, developmental or therapeutic counselling in order to facilitate the clients
  • Develop and document intervention plan based on identified needs in accordance to professional standards
  • Recommend or refer to other team members or third party services as required
  • Collaborate with other professionals in planning and implementing services that align with best practice, and ethical and professional standards
  • This position will be part of a team completed by a neurologist, a palliative care nurse, a social worker and a spiritual care provider. The role will work collaboratively with the team to determine intervention plans
  • Maintain patient records about psychosocial issues

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters Degree Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or along with a related professional designation
  • Provisionally Registered, Registered or eligible to Register with the College of Alberta Psychologists or registered with the Canadian Counselling Association.  Provisionals must provide their own supervision.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years related experience.  This may include time spent in supervised practice in the pursuit of obtaining Registered Psychologist status.
  • Excellent time management, interpersonal and communication skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience with working with the public is a strong asset
  • Knowledge of health and scientific terminology is a strong asset
  • Health services research experience is a strong asset
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, staff, and research team members
