Position Overview

The Department of Radiology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Research Associate.  This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

This position will be part of the development and support of focused ultrasound-based experimentation in studies with human subjects, and manage day-to-day operational aspects of the equipment required for this experimentation. 

The Research Associate position will have a very active role in the execution of studies at University of Calgary, in Foothills campus.  The Research Associate will lead efforts to adapt MRI-guided devices for the exploration of focused ultrasound studies in humans. The Research Associate will deal with ultrasound equipment, in vitro and in vivo settings, Magnetic Resonance Imaging acquisitions, and execution of studies of focused ultrasound with human participants.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Participate in translational efforts
  • Operate focused ultrasound equipment for studies with human subjects
  • Determine and Purchase ordering of equipment and consumables
  • When necessary represent the Centre on committees related to the research operations and occupational health and safety
  • Evaluate facilities and make recommendations for improvements/renovations to improve functionality of the Focused Ultrasound Lab as needed
  • Setting and maintenance of the following major pieces of equipment (but not limited to)
    • Low-intensity focused ultrasound system guided by neuronavigation
    • MRI-guided equipment for focused ultrasound experimentation
  • Independently design and execute experimental protocols
  • Prepare and submit results in scientific journals and conferences
  • Along with the Principle Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the research project(s) and research group
  • Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
  • Monitor and control the schedule, budget, quality and risk of projects undertaken by the research team
  • Full responsibility for quality control
  • Monitor and control the financial health of the group; track spending and intervene to maximize cost effectiveness of the group activities when required
  • Develops operating procedures, safety protocols, and makes recommendation on workflow improvements

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters level in the areas of therapeutic ultrasound, medical imaging or similar
  • 2 years’ experience in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Experience in integration of MRI-guided devices based on focused ultrasound
  • Track record of publications as first author
  • Minimum 2 years’ of technical experience (after undergraduate completion)
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python and Matlab
  • Skills in processing of medical imaging
  • Advance experimentation skills in an MRI environment
  • Advanced knowledge of standard electronic laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, amplifiers, network analyzers
  • Knowledge of 3D design, 3D printing and machine shop operation
  • Project management skills preferred
  • Provide technical support for others through consultation on research issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of related technical procedures
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation, and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced or expert skills in MS Office Suite, Internet
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • WHIMIS certification
