Course description:

This is the first of two intensive advanced reading courses in the Arabic language. Throughout this course, the students will also be familiar with different sacred texts such as Tafsīr (Quranic exegesis) and Qiṣas al-Anbiyā’ (Tales of the Prophets) to the fables focused on the description of amazing and mythological creatures such as Qazvīni’s ‘Ajā’ib al-Makhlūqāt wa Gharā’ib alMawjūdāt (Marvels of Creatures and Strange things existing) and Kalīla wa Dimna as well as the epic of the legendary Arabic heroin Dhāt al-Himma in Sīrat Dhāt al-Himma.

Class schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11am-1pm (NOTE: All courses at UofT Mississauga are expected to be delivered in-person in Fall/Winter 2022-23. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the University.)

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I – $8489.67 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $8869.25 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II – $9085.58 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III – $9301.90 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:
Applicants must have a completed a graduate level degree in the relevant area of the course. Demonstrated experience teaching university-level Arabic language and cultural studies courses is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Preference will be given those with experience teaching a similar language/culture course. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.

Description of duties:

Preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration, and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours and maintaining other forms of contact with students; supervising TAs assigned to the course (if any); attending course administrative meetings as required.
