The International Foundation Program seeks a Sessional Lecturer from September 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023 for the following course:

Course Name:  IFP100Y1Y – THEMES IN WORLD HISTORY
    
Course Description: Surveys the development of human societies from their origins to the present using examples from across the world.  Topics may include the environment; cultural development and interaction; the creation and nature of belief systems; political, economic and social structures; gender relations; and the relationship between global patterns and local developments  

Estimated Course Enrolment: 250 students


Estimated TA Support: 2,175 hours


Class Schedule:

Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Tutorials will be held at the following times: Tuesdays 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Tuesdays 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Wednesdays 2:00 p.m. -4:00 p.m.; Thursdays 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Thursdays 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.  

Note: This course will be delivered in-person. However, please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.
 

Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023

Salary: $16,979.33 (Sessional Lecturer I) – $17,738.50 (Sessional Lecturer I Long Term) – $18,171.15 (Sessional Lecturer II) – $18,603.79 (Sessional Lecturer III)

Minimum QualificationsPhD in History or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated evidence of superior undergraduate teaching preferred. Previous experience teaching a similar course is highly desirable. Experience teaching within a pathway or conditional acceptance program. Experience teaching within the IFP program preferred.

IFP100Y1Y is one of four core courses in the International Foundation Program which is a conditional admission program for international students who need to meet the university’s language requirement for admission. Upon successful completion of the program, students retain the credit earned from this course which counts towards their degree requirement in the faculties of Arts & Science, Architecture, and Music. As such, this is a high stakes course for students and the instructor of IFP100Y1 works closely with program staff and lead instructors of the three other support courses. These support courses include a reading and writing course, a listening and speaking course, and an academic skills course that scaffold skills required for successful completion of IFP100Y1Y.

The salary will be the minimum rates in the collective agreement (as noted above) plus an additional 4% stipend to account for the following duties: Over the course of this appointment, the Sessional Lecturer will be required to attend approximately 30 hours of meetings with the International Foundation Program Director, Assistant Academic Director and Lead Instructors to coordinate the sequence of assignments, assessments, and learning outcomes with the language courses. Meetings may commence in August 2022.  Attendance at a student orientation is required on September 6th, 2022.

    
Description of Duties: Normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; TA supervision; and holding regular office hours.
