Course description:

This course examines language acquisition by different populations: first language acquisition by normal, deaf and impaired children; first language re-acquisition by aphasic patients; second language acquisition by children and adults. The question that we will ask is the following: what are the similarities and differences across acquisition contexts? Comparative theoretical approaches will be examined in order to gain an insight into the following topics: evidence for innate linguistic endowment, the stages in the development of grammar, the role of input. An important component will be the analysis of both spontaneous corpora and experimental work.

Class schedule: Mondays 5pm-7pm and Wednesdays 11am-12pm (NOTE: All courses at UofT Mississauga are expected to be delivered in-person in Fall/Winter 2022-23. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the University.)

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I – $8489.67 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $8869.25 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)
Sessional Lecturer II – $9085.58 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)
Sessional Lecturer III – $9301.90 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field is required. Mastery of subject material, with a background in experimental linguistics is required. Demonstrated excellence and experience teaching university-level Linguistics courses is required.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with ongoing linguistic research related to the subject area and with experience teaching the same, or a similar, course in Linguistics. Experience in course management through Quercus/Canvas is also preferred. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.


Description of duties: Preparation and delivery of course content; design, administration, and grading of assessments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours and maintaining other forms of contact with students; supervising any teaching assistants assigned to the course; attending course administrative meetings as required.
