The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 230 people, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university, but it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. For the department of Biogeochemical Signals we are looking for a Scientific Coordinator (m/f/d) for the ITMS project in full-time, limited until 31.07.2026.

Background and position description

As part of several collaborative research projects funded by the BMBF, various research disciplines will contribute to setting up the Integrated Greenhouse Gas Monitoring System for Germany (ITMS). The aim of the ITMS is to enable Germany to monitor the sources and sinks of the three most important long-lived greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) operationally and with the help of independent measurements. The joint project ITMS-K (ITMS coordination) is concerned with the joint coordination of the various ITMS joint projects with the participation of the DWD (overall ITMS coordination), the KIT (coordination of the ITMS-Q&S (sources and sinks)), the University of Bremen (coordination of ITMS-B (observations)), and the MPI-BGC (coordination of ITMS-M (modelling)).
We are looking for a person with scientific understanding in the area of atmospheric greenhouse gases, who has the necessary skills to lead an interdisciplinary scientific project and ensure the communication of the results.

Your tasks

  • Collaboration with the PIs of the ITMS collaborative projects (MPI-BGC, DWD, U. Heidelberg, U. Bremen, KIT) to facilitate scientific interaction and communication between the multidisciplinary team of scientists
  • Presentation of the project at national and international events
  • Organisation of project meetings
  • Preparation of project reports, coordination of project reporting to the funding agency
  • Organization of a benchmarking system to evaluate the progress in the development of the GHG monitoring system

Your profile

  • PhD in a relevant field (geosciences, environmental sciences, meteorology)
  • Experience in the scientific coordination of complex interdisciplinary research projects
  • Knowledge in public relations and outreach  
  • Experience in the creation of websites
  • Experience in writing scientific and administrative reports and proposals
  • strong teamwork and intercultural skills as well as self-initiative and sense of responsibility
  • a goal-oriented, committing, structured way of working
  • Very good knowledge of the German and English languages, both written and spoken

Our offer

Part-time employment is possible. If the requirements of the collective agreement are met, the position will be grouped in accordance with TVöD Bund, with an expected grouping in E13; in addition, we grant a retirement pension based on the public service (VBL).
