At the School of Education, Culture and Communication (UKK) our students mainly study programmes relating to teacher education, but we also offer programmes and courses in languages and communication, mathematics/applied mathematics, physics, music and opera as well as the preparatory technical foundation year. MDU’s research specialisation educational sciences and mathematics is part of the School. We collaborate with the surrounding community and our international partners. Lärum, which is the University’s Centre for Teaching and Learning for staff and students, also belongs to UKK.

Position description

At MDU there is a lively environment in mathematics, including teaching and research oriented towards applied areas such as finance and engineering. We now want to further strengthen our group by recruiting a PhD student in mathematics/applied mathematics with direction towards discrete mathematics and applications. You will play an important role in the work of strengthening the research environment MAM (mathematics/applied mathematics), specifically the research group “Discrete Mathematics and Modelling of Behaviour and Culture”.

The work assignments comprise:

  • Research in the field of the third-cycle studies in mathematic/applied mathematics with direction towards discrete mathematics and applications. More information can be found below about:
  • Institutional duties, which may include:
    • teaching at undergraduate and advanced level in mathematics/applied mathematics, which may involve teaching at the university’s two campus locations, Västerås and Eskilstuna, as well as distance teaching. Supervision and co-supervision at undergraduate and advanced level may also be relevant for the position.
    • administration (eg course responsibility or program coordination) and development of the preparatory year, bachelor’s and master’s programs in engineering and financial mathematics and of the mathematics courses in the engineering programs at MDU.

Qualifications

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).

 Specifically, for the third-cycle studies (PhD studies) in the subject of mathematics/applied mathematics, a degree at advanced level is required as well as 90 credits in the subject area, of which 60 credits at advanced level, or equivalent.

You need to have good teamwork skills as the tasks require collaboration both internally at the academy and with other academies and sections of MDU.

As a PhD student, you need to be able to work independently and to have a structured and well-organized way of working, have the ability to work with many different tasks in parallel and independently prioritize and plan your work.

You should be able to express yourself well in speech and writing in English

Merit

 Qualifications considered to be a merit include:

  • Experience in using Matlab, Latex, Zoom and Canvas (or other learning platforms),
