A 100% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in ICT, affiliated to the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research, for a period of two years. Opportunities for extensions may exist depending on continued funding and the successful candidates’ active participation in securing future funding will be particularly welcome. The position is located, at Campus Grimstad. The starting date is as soon as possible or to be negotiated with the Faculty.

The Department of ICT has three large and active research groups in Information and Communication Technology including 12 Professors, 25 Associate Professors/ Assistant professors and about 30 Research Fellows on the PhD programme in ICT. The department pursues a variety of research interests, focusing especially on ICT and crisis management, Artificial Intelligence, eLearning and eHealth. The department has successfully led a number of large research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, the EU research programmes FP7 and H2020 as well as national and international industries.

AI4Citizens is an international and interdisciplinary research collaboration between The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), The University of Agder (UiA), BI Norwegian Business School, and public safety departments from Norway, Germany, The Netherlands, and The United Kingdom. UiA is a research partner in the national NORCICS Center of Excellence in research-based innovation – The Norwegian Center for Cybersecurity for Critical Sector – hosted by NTNU and opportunities exist for close collaboration with the NORCICS consortium.

Research topic

Police organisations around the world routinely collect large amounts of digital data to fulfil their mandate of maintaining public safety. There is an urgent need for research and development of novel non-intrusive security solutions that overcome the growing volume and complexity of the collected surveillance data. Artificial intelligence offers the opportunity to simultaneously address the imperatives of improved security, privacy protection, and promotion and safeguarding of human rights. Our aim is the creation of a balanced and responsible socio-technical approach and solution to smart-city policing that helps diminish sociocultural biases and achieve public acceptance.

The successful candidate will contribute with novel research mainly to anonymization of crowd surveillance videos.

Required qualifications

  • PhD degree in a related field (e.g. computer vision, machine learning, AI). Potential applicants must have had their theses approved by the time of the application deadline.
  • Relevant academic credentials
  • Written and spoken English proficiency
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of the following:
    • Computer vision
    • Deep learning
    • Video anonymization
    • Crowd monitoring
  • In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent general working knowledge of algorithms and expert level programming skills. Willingness to work in a collaborative research project is essential.

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1352 Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, NOK 563 900 – 626 100 gross salary per year. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
