At the Art Academy – Department of Contemporary Art, there is a vacancy for a position as Associate Professor (100%) in art history and contemporary art theory.  

We are looking for an associate professor with an academic, curatorial or other relevant academic background. Potential candidates must be able to develop and teach a range of introductions and lectures on theoretical issues related to the art field. We are seeking applicants with a broad knowledge of contemporary art, philosophy, politics, and history. 

Together with colleagues in the area called ‘Reflection’ at the Art Academy, our new associate professor will develop and teach theoretical courses for both the BA- and the MA-program in Fine Art. The teaching format is mainly lectures, supplemented by seminars and reading groups.  

The position requires a critical commitment to support students’ artistic developments as well as the research environment of the Art Academy. The position includes 46% of research-time for academic research. Relevant applicants must have an interest in developing the research activities of the Art Academy – Department of Contemporary Art.  

The applicant must have an extended professional network, both locally and international. Additional experience in academic and curatorial writing and editing as well as PhD-supervision will be valued.  

Work tasks:

  • Teaching and supervision in art history and art theory 
  • Shared responsibility for learning resources in the specialist field 
  • Research, project development, external funding and project leadership. 
  • Recruitment of BA, MA and Ph.D. students 
  • Presentation/Dissemination of results 
  • Organisation and facilitation of these work tasks 
  • Administrative and other management duties 

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The position as associate professor requires a completed PhD in art history/ art theory or in other relevant academic fields or disciplines, or competence at the corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality as a PhD.  

Basic teaching training and experience with the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience could replace a university pedagogy program. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, he/she will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment. 

Pedagogical training must be documented in a pedagogical portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. University of Bergen emphasizes educational qualifications for appointment to scientific positions. 

The applicants’ academic competence will be assessed by an expert committee. The most highly qualified applicants will be called in for interview and trial lecture by an internal interview team.

The teaching language is Scandinavian or English. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of being appointed.
