At the Grieg Academy Department of Music there is a vacant position as PhD Research fellow in the discipline of music therapy. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years, starting 02.01.2023, and is financed by the University of Bergen (UiB). 

About the project/work tasks:

The successful candidate must develop their project within the area of music therapy. It is a requisite that the fellow completes the project within the period of employment. The core aim of the fellowship is to lead to the acquisition of a PhD qualification, which qualifies the fellow for independent research and for other roles in society that requires specialist competencies. 

About the disciplinary area: 

The discipline of music therapy at the Grieg Academy – Department of Music, is defined as the interdisciplinary study of music and health, and is rooted in a humanistic and community-orientated music therapy tradition. The Grieg Academy has a five-year Integrated Master in Music Therapy program. This study program offers both practical and scholarly approaches, and explores the relationships between music and health in clinical contexts and in everyday life. The research milieu is organized in a twin-center – the Grieg Academy Music Therapy Research Centre, GAMUT, in collaboration with NORCE. 

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant must have a Norwegian master’s degree or equivalent education from abroad within music therapy. Applicants with degrees in other relevant fields can be assessed if their project is within musicology. Applicants must have completed a master’s thesis or an equivalent educational background, with a B or better. The work on the master’s thesis should correspond to a minimum of 30 ECTS credits.  

The project proposal should fall within music therapy and will be assessed with reference to existing research milieus and available competence within the department. The candidate’s main supervisor will normally come from the permanent academic staff of the department. The proposed supervisor must have confirmed his or her willingness to supervise the project, and the name of the supervisor must be stated in the application.  

Personal and human interaction skills will be included in the evaluation. Ambition and potential will also count as part of the candidate assessment. 

About the PhD position:

The PhD Fellow will be employed by the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, with the right and obligation to participate in teaching, exam work and/or research administration. The research and educational part of the position is 75%, while the other 25% is allocated to teaching and other obligations.  

The successful applicant will be accepted into the doctoral program of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bergen. The Grieg Academy is also a partner in the regional Grieg Research School in Interdisciplinary Music Studies, which brings together doctoral candidates from a broad interdisciplinary music field. Research fellows will also relate to relevant research groups at the department.  

The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and conform to the regulations that apply to the position

A committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The primary criteria in the evaluation are the applicant’s research potential as indicated by the research proposal, master’s thesis and other available scientific work.
