We have developed a device to simultaneously characterize molecular structure and size by combining microfluidic technology with infrared spectroscopy (both conventional and nonlinear). This device produces two- and three-dimensional spectra, in which the different species present in a solution are separated based on their infrared frequencies and their size: InfraRed Diffusion-Ordered SpectroscopY (IRDOSY). We have already carried out proof-of-concept experiments and built a functional model of the device, see https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/anie.202213424
What are you going to do
In this project, you will develop IR-DOSY into an effective, non-invasive, and easy-to-use lab tool to simultaneously characterize molecular structure and size, and investigate its applicability to study a wide range of systems, including amyloids, supramolecular cages, and polymers.
You will:
- Design and develop a donkey-proof device (in cooperation with the UvA’s technology center) and data-analysis method (in cooperation with a data-science expert) for performing and processing IRDOSY experiments;
- Apply IRDOSY to real-life samples and publish your results in peer-reviewed journals;
- Help to transfer IRDOSY to potential third parties.
What do we require
- A PhD in chemistry or physics;
- Experience with spectroscopy;
- Good communication skills in oral and written English;
- Good time management skills;
- Interest in collaborating with colleagues within and outside the institute.
Our offer
A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting on January 1, 2023, for the duration of 15 months.
Based on a full-time contract (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from € 2,960,- to € 4,670,- (scale 10), depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
The UvA offers excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.
What else do we offer
- A function in which initiative is strongly valued;
- An enthusiastic team that welcomes new members;
- An inspiring academic and international environment in the heart of Amsterdam.
About us
The Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) Faculty of Science. HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavor & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organized into four themes: Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Synthesis & Catalysis and Molecular Photonics.
The Molecular Photonics Group aims to advance the fundamental knowledge of the dynamics of excited states in molecules and nano-sized objects, and to contribute with its expertise to applications of the photosciences.
To work at the University of Amsterdam is to work in a discerning, independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterized by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society. Here you can read more about working at the University of Amsterdam.
