Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering invites applications for

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN TECHNICAL PSYCHOACOUSTICS (tenure track)

The position is to be filled at Assistant Professor level of the Aalto University Tenure Track system. Psychoacoustics is a field which studies the perception of sound and human hearing mechanisms. The understanding of human hearing is crucial when developing technologies where the human is the receiver in the end of a communication chain. Such technologies are developed, for example, in the fields of audio technology, musical acoustics, aided hearing, environmental noise, virtual and augmented reality, and speech communication. The term “technical psychoacoustics” refers to the cross-section between audio, acoustics, and human behavioral sciences.

As a professor at the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DICE) you will establish and supervise your own research group. You will be responsible for a psychoacoustics-related course for the BSc program on Engineering Psychology and will take part also in education of the Acoustics and Audio Technology MSc Major.

Scientific Environment

The Aalto Acoustics Lab is an umbrella organization inside Aalto University connecting research groups focusing on any field of acoustics. It has outstanding facilities for sound-related research, including three anechoic chambers, a listening room, a variable acoustics room, sound-proof listening booths, a large number of loudspeakers and headphones, high-quality microphones and other measurement equipment.  The Aalto Acoustics Lab is one of the leading European research and higher education institutions in the field of acoustics and audio technology. The professors of the lab have a long reputation in research related to audio signal processing, spatial sound technologies, concert hall acoustics, acoustical measurement systems, to name a few topics.

The Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DICE) has about 20 professors in the faculty, with research clusters on Human-centric TechnologyCommunication and Networked Systems, and Fundamentals of Information and Communications Engineering. At the department you will have numerous opportunities to link psychoacoustics, audio, acoustics, and other human-centric technologies. The activities of the department take place in the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo (Helsinki metropolitan area).
