The Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy in Munich is offering several PhD Positions in Law (m/f/d) for its new doctoral group “Growing Up in the Welfare State”.

The projects to be worked on within the framework of this group should deal with assistance and support services for children and young people in a broad sense, including school education. There is room for the inclusion of one’s own project ideas. The projects should take a comparative approach. There is also the possibility of using methods of empirical research (such as text and network analyses, surveys to be evaluated quantitatively and/or qualitatively). The start date is as soon as possible.

Doctoral candidates receive doctoral funding contracts, which combine research freedom with social security. They allow doctoral researchers to devote themselves independently to their scientific work without any constraints.

Applicants are expected to hold an excellent degree in law that meets the doctoral admission requirements of the Law Faculty at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (“first class” or “high upper second class”). Prior experience in the field of social law and/or comparative law will be considered an advantage. Full proficiency in English is expected and additional language skills are desirable.

We offer attractive working conditions in a modern, well-equipped institute with a global network. Our institute holds the world’s largest social law library and is located close to Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. The agreed working time currently amounts to 39 hours per week. Payment is based on the Collective Wage Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD) and currently amounts to a monthly minimum of just under €2,700 gross. Funding contracts are for a duration of three years, with the possibility of extension for another year. Research visits – also abroad – within the framework of the doctorate are also supported with funding.
