We seek to recruit a highly motivated researcher with a strong track record in atomic resolution scanning probe microscopy for a Research Associate/Fellow position. The post is funded by an EPSRC New Horizons award entitled “A New Spin On Atomic Logic” (grant reference: EP/V049763/1, PI: Prof. Philip Moriarty), which is based 70% in the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics & Nanoscience (ECMN) Group in Physics & Astronomy (UoN), and involves close collaboration with Prof. Lev. Kantorovich’s condensed matter theory group at King’s College London. The project also involves collaboration with Prof. Robert Wolkow’s research team at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in atomic/molecular resolution scanning probe microscopy. Experience with density functional theory (DFT) calculations would also be helpful, although this is not essential to be considered for the role.
The position will be based in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Nottingham which has a thriving research culture of both experimental and theoretical groups across a broad spectrum of physics topics including condensed matter physics and nanoscience. Academics within the department are highly regarded for their excellence in research and teaching. They have a history of securing funding from research council sources and working with industry on a wide range of national and international projects.
The successful candidate will carry out the following duties:
- Planning and conducting primary research towards the goals of the project;
- Writing up research for publication, and contributing to dissemination both at scientific conferences and via public engagement activities;
- Assisting where appropriate with supervising undergraduate and PhD research projects.
Candidates must:
- Hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in atomic resolution scanning probe microscopy;
- Have a background in Ultrahigh vacuum techniques and technology, Single atom manipulation with scanning probes, and Cryogenic liquid handling;
- Have the ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, both internally and externally;
- Be able to start on 1st July 2023.
The post is offered on a full time (36.25 hours per week), fixed term contract until the 2nd July 2024. Job share arrangements may be considered.
As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, BAME, LGBTQIA+ or disabilities communities. This will be separate to the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Philip Moriarty (email: philip.moriarty@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
