The University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Research Fellow to develop advanced automated composite preforming technologies. You will support the development of a fully instrumented pilot line (Physical Twin) for creating complex 3D fibre preforms suitable for liquid composite moulding, which will be linked to a Digital Twin to provide real-time monitoring and diagnostics. You will be based within the Composites Research Group at Nottingham, known for its’ world class research output and facilities.

You will work on a project that is part of the EPSRC Materials Made Smarter Research Centre – https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/V061798/1 

You will be an early stage researcher looking to take the first steps towards an independent academic career. You will be responsible for the design and manufacture of the Physical Twin and will work closely with other academics and a range of industrial partners from the UK composites sector. You will have the opportunity to use your initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods and extend your research portfolio. It is essential that you are of a practical nature with strong engineering design skills, preferably with some experience in mechatronics. 

You will have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to build relationships and collaborate with others. An element of your role is to develop and sustain a national reputation as a research leader in the field of composites manufacturing and contribute to the development of research strategies and initiatives, fostering collaboration and links with industry.

You will be degree educated with a PhD or equivalent in relevant subject area or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience in research area OR near to completion of a PhD.
