We are now hiring a research assistant for the project:

“Cities and Socio-Economic Segregation over the Long Run, 1880–2017” 

The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council (grant no.: 2022-02290) and has the aim of analyzing changes to urban socio-economic segregation over the 1880– 2017 period and how these are linked to shifts in transportation technology and urban planning using data for six Swedish cities. The project will use a combination of historical maps and digitized census data which is combined with contemporary geocoded population registers.

The project will have a large impact on our understanding of the factors that drive socioeconomic segregation. By applying a long-term perspective on the impact of transportation technology and urban planning it provides crucial knowledge to researchers, policy makers, and the interested public for the design of today’s cities.   

Duties
Tasks consists of assisting the project members in the digitalization and georeferencing of historical maps as well as to associate coordinates to historical address data. Text writing in English, as well as data management, will also be included in the tasks. A high degree of independent analytical capacity is expected. Other tasks may also be included depending on the project’s needs.

Requirements

  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to work independently 
  • Good ability to collaborate 
  • Ability to absorb information and to work with materials that are in Swedish

As an individual, you are used to working independently. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Additional qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economic History or other relevant field (for example human geography, economics, or sociology)
  • Experience of working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Experience with data management and programming in R and/or Stata
  • Experience of working with historical map materials
  • Experience of working with historical population data

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment 100 % or as agreed. Starting date 4th of September 2023 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala, or as agreed.
