The PhD position is located at Campus Gotland in Visby within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU). The interdisciplinary research in NRHU acknowledges that the environment and its natural resources and ecosystem services constitute a prerequisite for strong sustainable development. Research themes in NRHU at Campus Gotland include sustainability aspects of recreational fisheries, nature tourism, coastal zone management, ecosystem services, etc. For more information: NRHU.

The PhD project will focus on the thematic area “Management and valuation of recreational fisheries”. Recreational fishing, i.e., all fishing that is not commercial, is an important activity both in Sweden and other countries. In Sweden, as much as 1.5 million people fish annually for recreational purposes with an expenditure around 15 billion SEK per year. Moreover, recreational fishing is an important element of the nature-based tourism sector in Sweden that supports small and medium size entrepreneurs, mostly in rural areas. Maintenance of viable fish populations and sustainable management of fisheries are necessary prerequisites for long-term provisioning of recreational activities, and economic and rural development. The challenges to fish stocks include both environmental problems and habitat loss, and increasing pressure from recreational fishing itself.

The future management and development of recreational fishing and fishing tourism is based on knowledge of how much fish there is and how stocks change, but equally important is knowledge of how people fish, how they can contribute to sustainable fishing and socio-economic evaluation of fisheries. Environmental management activities and restoration of fish habitat are essential in maintaining viable fish stocks. Other management tools include catch reporting, guidelines for fish handling while applying catch and release, restrictions on access, catches and gear, and fish stocking in areas where natural stocks are weak. Sustainability assessments and socio-economic evaluations of management measures and their impact on the quality of the fishing experience are central to decisions within policy and resource allocation regarding the future development of recreational fishing and fishing tourism.
