Project description
The Human Molecular Ecology lab, at IMBIM, Uppsala University, and SciLifeLab, led by associate senior lecturer Luisa W. Hugerth, is seeking a thorough and engaged postdoctoral fellow. The group studies the human microbiome, both as an outcome of our life history and as an exposure affecting health and disease. Most of our work is focused on obstetrics and gynecology, including the effects of the microbiome on circulating sex hormones. Our work is primarily bioinformatic, using both cohorts collected in collaboration with clinical partners and freely available data. The ability to remain updated, compare and select methods in the fast-moving field of metagenomics is therefore crucial.

We’re looking for a candidate with experience working with viruses in complex samples. A lot of metagenomic data and associated patient-level data is already available from previous large cohorts, but the non-bacterial components are typically neglected. The successful candidate will use state-of-the-art protocols for re-exploring previously published data with a focus on its viral components.

This position is funded by the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), a 12-year initiative funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation. The purpose of the program is to recruit and train the next generation of data-driven life scientists and to create globally leading computational and data science capabilities that will advance life science in Sweden.

Duties
The candidate will conduct research within the given area. Substantial freedom is given for the candidate to develop the project in the most productive direction. Other departmental tasks, for example engagement in teaching, may be included to a minor extent if this is the wish of the candidate.

Formal requirements and evaluation
The candidate should hold a PhD degree with a focus on metagenomics, bioinformatics, virology, microbiology, or a related topic. Practical and theoretical knowledge of human microbiome and viral genetics are regarded as particular strengths. The candidate is expected to both take own initiatives and collaborate with other group members, as well as external collaborators. In the evaluation process, the scientific potential of the candidate will constitute the main criterion. Finally, significant weight will be given to personal suitability.

Eligibility
For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within a maximum of three years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, activity in trade unions, etc. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant’s main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Application
Please submit your application including i) a CV, ii) a cover letter describing your research interests, skills and motivation to apply for the position, iii) publications and/or a copy of your PhD thesis, together with iv) contact information of at least two referees (phone number and e-mail address).
