PhD Position in “Novel Phase Extraction Algorithms for Laser Interferometric Inertial Sensors based on Deep Frequency Modulation Interferometry”

We, the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI) in Hanover, Germany, are looking for a Ph.D. student (m/f/d) in physics or a closely related field to continue our work on compact optical readout systems for laser interferometric experiments in gravitational physics.

Your responsibilities

  • Design of compact optical interferometers
  • Design of readout electronics and algorithms
  • Building and operating experiments
  • Deploying sensors in the torsion balance facility
  • Analyzing the results
  • Writing scientific publications

In particular, we want to continue and extend the existing work on several optical topologies of the sensor head, and on the readout, scheme based on Deep Frequency or Deep Phase Modulation Interferometry to novel algorithms based on Kalman filters.

Your profile

Previous experience in the topics above is desirable. In particular, the ideal candidate should have prior experience in one or more of the following topics:

  • Laser interferometry (experimental)
  • Analog electronics
  • Digital electronics including FPGA and microprocessor programming
  • Data analysis techniques like nonlinear least-squares fit and Kalman filtering

If the candidate does not hold a master’s degree in Physics or Mathematics, a Ph.D. in engineering can be obtained in collaboration with an engineering faculty. Alternatively, candidates without a master’s degree in Physics or Mathematics may pursue a Ph.D. in Physics, subject to completing additional graduate-level Physics courses.

Your application

To apply, please submit your application via our job portal.

You will be asked to upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, university transcripts, a statement of research interests, a list of publications (if available) and your Master thesis (if available). Applicants will need to indicate the names of two referees for recommendation letters. Please fill in the contact information for the referees well before the deadline, so that reference letters can be received in time. Referees will receive an email with instructions on how to upload their letters. In case of problems with the application form, please contact jobs@aei.mpg.de.

Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The deadline for full consideration is September 30, 2023, including reception of reference letter. Applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
