The Max Planck Society is Germany’s premier research organization. The 85 Max Planck Institutes conduct research at highest levels, in the service of the general public, in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.

The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) is located at the Science Campus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld and investigates dynamical phenomena within matter down to the elementary timescales of atomic and electronic motions, the femtosecond or attosecond timescale. The Institute is also a partner in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL), collaborating with the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) and the University of Hamburg for the development of science based on the X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs).

We are looking for a Post-Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d).

The position

Our research group develops methods for imaging the structure and dynamics of nanoscale objects. One such method is serial diffractive imaging where ultrabright X-ray pulses from XFELs are used to take millions of snapshot images of particles one at a time. These datasets can be used to understand the structural landscape of the particles and also track dynamic processes the system may be undergoing.

You will be designing and leading experiments to apply such methods to solve open problems in nanoscience. Additionally, you will be analyzing these data sets to obtain new insights into these systems.

Your qualification

We are looking for a highly qualified candidate with a doctoral degree in Physics, Chemistry or a related field. A strong track record in the study of nanosystems is highly desirable. Fluency in English, which is the working language, is necessary.

In addition, some prior experience with one or more of the following is beneficial, though it is not expected that you will have all:

  • Coherent diffractive imaging and associated techniques
  • Ultrafast dynamics using structural or spectroscopic probes
  • Python programming, including on large datasets

Our offer

We offer an innovative environment, which will give you the opportunity to develop your own ideas at the forefront of ultrafast science embedded in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL). We offer a position according to the German public pay scale (TVöD). The appointment is for two years with possibility of extension. Collaborations with experimental groups in Hamburg and other locations are planned.

The Max Planck Society strives for gender and diversity equality. We welcome applications from all backgrounds. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.
