The Optics and Sensing Laboratory at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen is looking for a student intern to support their research activities in using depth sensing technology for precise reconstruction of dense 3D human body shapes. This work has applications in computer vision and medicalresearch. It aims to provide an extensive comparison between several depth sensors used in 3D human scanning applications by analyzing synchronization and calibration abilities of these sensors and their interference with each other as well as their integration with other equipment such as high-res cameras and lights.
About us
We are supporting the development of highly realistic human and animal avatars for use in research, film, virtual reality, biology and medicine. Using unique 3D & 4D capture facilities, machine learning, computer vision and advanced graphics, we are modeling humans and animals shape and behavior.
Your tasks
- Operate machine vision cameras
- Write script for capturing multi-camera data using Software Development Kit (SDK)
- Compare different synchronization strategies between cameras to achieve better accuracy
- Develop methods for calibrating multiple depth sensors in large space environments
- Make the algorithms open-source and available to scientific community
Your profile
- Python programming skills
- Experience working with GIT platforms
- Familiarity with OpenCV and Open3D
- Experience with processing point cloud data and images
- Currently enrolled at a German university
Good to have experience with:
- Camera calibration methods
- C++
- Developing GUI applications (e.g., using Qt)
- Deep learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch)
What we offer
- Working in a multidisciplinary collaborative project at MPI for Intelligent Systems (Tübingen)
- Cutting-edge technologies related to computer vision and multi-sensor systems
- An open-minded and motivating working environment with international scientists, engineers and administrative staff
- Students without a Bachelor degree will earn €12/hour; Master students with a bachelor degree will be paid €13.03/hour
The position is ideally suited for students looking to extend their scientific and cultural horizons. You will be a part of a team of international scientists, engineers, and administrative staff. This position is limited to 6 months. Contracts are given per semester.
The position is available as of now and will be open until filled or no longer needed.
