The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in Egyptology with a focus on Ancient Egyptian Language and Written Culture. This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and the anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.
The Department is seeking a scholar who will enhance its curriculum and programs in the fields of Egyptology and Ancient Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations, with the demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses dealing with Egyptian literature and other textual sources, as well as courses on the different phases of Ancient Egyptian Language, including those of the first millennium BCE and later. We encourage applications from scholars whose work integrates recent theoretical advances that mitigate past historical biases and engage students through a foregrounding of Egypt’s deep cultural history and connections with neighboring regions. We welcome research that utilizes data science and innovative approaches to explore the rich corpus of ancient Egyptian written culture. A commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research and teaching, involving research opportunities for students, is strongly desired.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in Egyptology by the time of their appointment and have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the University-level and research commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and advance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level.
Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals and/or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by strong letters of reference, teaching accomplishments and the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below).
Salary to be commensurate with qualification and experience.
