We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Biostatistics and Multiscale Systems in the Computational Sciences & Engineering Division (CSED), Computing & Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Advanced Computing.
The candidate will work in a collaborative research and development environment focusing on biostatistics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). We are specifically seeking a candidate with solid experience with handling multimodal healthcare data. The position requires innovative thinking to design and implement statistical, AI and ML algorithmic solutions to real world problems in healthcare and biomedical research.
The candidatewill be a Postdoctoral Research Associate withinthe Biostatistics and Multiscale Systems (BSMS) Group of the Advanced Computing in Health Sciences Section (ACHS) in CSED. The ACHS delivers scalable and computational solutions to biomedical and healthcare delivery challenges. The BSMS Group focuses on conducting research in computational sciences in the context of biomedical sciences in support of the nation’s leading health initiatives.
As a postdoctoral research associate, the candidate will have the opportunity to conduct computational research and collaborate with scientists within the group as well as with external partners which may include other national laboratories, academia, or medical centers.
The candidate will perform groundbreaking research on a wide range of significant problems with the fastest computing platforms in the world. This position requires novel thinking, teamwork, and discovery in finding new approaches for analyzing massive and complex data, collaborating with worldwide experts, and publishing groundbreaking results.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Participate in research projects in biostatistics, AI, and ML with applications to health sciences at the direction of principle investigators or delegated research scientists
- Integrate research in biostatistics, AI, and ML with high performance computing systems
- Work on collaborative projects within ORNL and with external collaborators
- Publish papers, participate in conferences, and contribute to grant writing efforts within the group

Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
- A record of productive and creative research in biostatistics, AI and ML proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference presentations
Preferred Qualifications:
- A strong background in multi modal data handling – medical imaging, structured and unstructured clinical data
- Experience in developing and applying biostatistics, AI, and ML -based solutions to healthcare data
- Experience in neural networks: implementation and application of RNN and CNN
- Experience in Bayesian modelling and Monte Carlo methods
- Experience in software development and high-performance computing
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
