Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for a PhD student in autonomous systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Division of Vehicular Systems.

The position is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). As a PhD student within WASP, you will take part in the WASP graduate school and benefit from the program’s extensive network of PhD students and senior researchers.

WASP is Sweden’s largest single research program ever, a large national initiative for basic research, education, and recruitment of university faculty. The research within WASP covers artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, collaborative vehicles, complex software-intensive systems, and their cooperation with humans. WASP’s vision is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and software for the benefit of Swedish society and industry.

Your work assignments

Machine learning and optimal control are core techniques to enable an autonomous system to plan and act in dynamic and uncertain environments where actors enter and leave the environment dynamically and where the behavior of surrounding actors is uncertain. The development of theory, models, and methods to solve this problem contains major research challenges. This is a very active field of research, driven also by the development of autonomous vehicles that need to act in environments with different levels of complexity.

In this project we research new methods in machine learning and optimal control, and how they can be combined to generate robust and resilient methods for planning and control of autonomous systems. A core research question is how the behavior of the surrounding environment, e.g., pedestrians, cyclists, cars, can be predicted, and how they influence each other, and how this can be used to make probabilistic predictions of future behavior. These predictions should then be used to obtain proactive decision-making and control. The basic research and theoretical models will be evaluated in real-life datasets, e.g., in automated driving.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at a Master’s level in computer science, mechatronics, electrical engineering, engineering physics, applied math, or similar with excellent grades from an internationally visible university.

It is expected that you have very good oral and written proficiency in English. Further, it is necessary with a strong interest in high-quality research. You should have excellent abilities in mathematics, in particular statistics, dynamical systems, and control. Good programming skills, for example in Python and C++, are needed. Knowledge in machine learning, automatic control, and analysis of large data sets is especially meritorious and so is a Master’s thesis of high quality.

Your workplace

The Division of Vehicular Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University, conducts research and undergraduate education within autonomous systems, electrification, battery systems, diagnostics and prognostics, and modeling and control of vehicle functions.
