The University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies, located in the Department of Politics & International Studies (POLIS) and Downing College seek to appoint an Isaac Newton Trust Academic Career Development Fellow in Gender Studies and Human, Social, and Political Sciences. The Fellowship is a new opportunity for exceptional scholars to contribute to both research and teaching within a Department and College environment, offering excellent preparation for subsequent academic appointments at Cambridge or elsewhere.

The Fellowship is offered through partnership between the University of Cambridge Centre for Gender Studies, based in the Department of Politics & International Studies, and Downing College.

As an Isaac Newton Trust Academic Career Development Fellow, you will have an opportunity to:

  • enjoy protected time for an independent research project;
  • be embedded in a Department research and teaching culture;
  • teach in Colleges in small groups;
  • to act as a College Director of Studies for students choosing to take papers in Politics;
  • teach undergraduate and/or Masters students in a Department setting;
  • be mentored by Department members in academic skills (teaching, research, publication, grant applications, academic administration).

Eligible candidates will be at an early stage of their career with typically less than three years’ experience post-PhD/equivalent, exclusive of any career breaks. You will either already hold a PhD, or have an equivalent qualification, or will have submitted your doctoral dissertation by the Fellowship application deadline. As part of your application, you will submit a short statement of your current and future research plans, and a chapter or article demonstrating your research interests.

You will be able to demonstrate an appetite for enquiry and an enthusiasm for teaching at all levels. You will have the ability to balance competing priorities across the full range of Fellowship activities and to build effective relationships with students, academic and professional staff across the collegiate University.

The purpose of the Fellowship is to support and maintain the University’s national and international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The Fellow will develop an independent research profile, carrying out research at a similar level to that undertaken by lecturing staff and will provide substantial scope for originality, interpretation and presentation of results. The Fellow will also develop a portfolio of skills in teaching at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, including a mix of supervisions, seminars and lectures as part of their overall contribution to the Department. Through this, the Fellow contributes to the strength of research in relevant subject areas, and the delivery of teaching excellence in both Department and College settings.
